artist statement

Art and artistic expression have been a major part of my life since early childhood. My father was a professional artist, and began teaching me at a very young age. We traveled to many national parks and beautiful natural areas during my childhood, which sparked my love for the outdoors. I continued by studying art in college, and have turned my focus towards Alaska scenery. Having lived in Juneau since 1991, I never cease to be amazed at the beauty of Alaska.

I paint in oils and am attracted to both the stark and subtle themes that are unique to this environment, especially the ever-changing nature of water scenes. I bring tonalist themes to my work, attempting to capture and relate a mood to the viewer. I enjoy painting both in plein air and in the studio, weather dependent!  My pieces are generally small to medium in size, and I paint on both boards and canvases to provide a specific feeling for each piece. I enjoy the stark contrasts of dark and light that are often evident in the local scenery and attempt to translate that into my art.

My work is represented exclusively by Annie Kaills Gallery in Juneau, AK, with limited edition prints and originals available at the gallery or on their website, as well as directly through my online shop.
